Grand Theft Auto 5 Actors Recreate Lamar Roasts Franklin Scene

Despite being over seven years old, Grand Theft Auto 5 remains one of the most popular games on the market. While GTA 5 is still selling tremendously and being discussed consistently years after its original release, it has recently been the subject of extra attention due to a new meme.

Gamers and non-gamers alike have fallen in love with the scene where Lamar roasts Franklin, tweaking the already funny moment in small but memorable ways. Some clips turn Lamar into a valley girl, changing the dialogue to fit the new role, while others show the roasting from a random civilian’s point of view. Constantly evolving and limited only by each meme maker’s imagination, the meme could last a bit longer than other internet fads.

However, the best Lamar and Franklin meme yet has been created by the actors who played the characters in the original scene. Franklin actor Shawn Fonteno and Lamar actor Gerald “Slink” Johnson dressed up as their respective characters for the clip, with Lamar’s signature green shirt and Franklin’s blue top looking just like they do in-game. While it would have been funny enough to have them recite their dialogue word for word in a clip, the PlayStation Haven video goes a step further.

Aside from the Grand Theft Auto 5 characters reciting their dialogue in the iconic outfits from the heavily memed scene, the duo manages to include the same mannerisms that are seen in the game’s animations. Johnson nails Lamar’s walk, poses, and overall sass, while Fonteno’s touch of his head following the comment about his “yee yee ass haircut” is brilliant. If that was not enough, the scene is perfectly shot, with the same cuts used for moments such as Franklin’s hilarious “what” at the end of the roast.

Instantly ranking at the top of the list due to just how meta the video is, PlayStation Haven and the excellent duo of actors could not have done a better job. While seeing more absurd variants of the clip is obviously a blast, such as Red Dead Redemption 2’s Arthur Morgan laying into Franklin or dozens of Lamar’s saying the same thing, it is hard to top the original. While there will surely be more “Lamar Roasts Franklin” memes in the future, Shawn Fonteno and Gerald “Slink” Johnson have undoubtedly raised the bar.

Still, for people looking for something a bit more random, it is always possible to watch Skyrim’s Whiterun Guard throw insults in Franklin’s direction. With Kermit, Harry Potter, and Stone Cold Steve Austin already having done the same, it will be interesting to see who players think of using next.

The enhanced version of Grand Theft Auto 5 is currently being developed for the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.
