John Diggle will remain a fixture in the Arrowverse for years to come and is finally getting his own show though he won’t be ring-slinging as a Green Lantern.
Per Variety, David Ramsey has signed onto the latest installment in The CW’s DC continuity, Justice U, where Diggle shall seek out and train five young metahumans to be the next generation of heroes.
“After spending years fighting alongside masked heroes, Diggle (Ramsey) embarks on a new mission to recruit five young metahumans to live undercover as freshmen at a prestigious university,” says Variety’s reportage.
“There he will oversee their education and train them to become the heroes of tomorrow. The show is based on characters from the DC pantheon,” they continue.
Justice U’s premise sounds a bit like the Justice League Academy comic although that doesn’t mean they are adapting the book in any fashion. If they do, CW would do well to avoid the series’s recent pitfalls relating to cadet Stitch.
Ramsey will star and direct the pilot as he’s inked an overall deal as a director with Berlanti Productions. This means he will continue to direct episodes of Arrowverse shows like he’s done for Legends of Tomorrow and Supergirl, while also making cameos.
Superman & Lois EP Michael Narducci will write and executive produce with Zoanna Clack (Grey’s Anatomy). Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, and David Madden will executive produce alongside them and Geoff Johns.
The question of if Diggle becomes a Lantern lingers. Arrow’s finale made it seem like there wasn’t any doubt, but the plot thread hasn’t been followed up on despite Dig showing up everywhere.
Maybe the aim with Justice U is to give fans some closure on that one if the show gets picked up by the network. There’s a chance it won’t once CW is sold and whoever acquires it restructures their business and programming schedule.
CW is developing a female-led Zorro series and a Gotham Knights concept among a host of other projects that might never be made ultimately when the fate of the young adult-skewing network is decided.
Does Justice U sound like something you’d watch? On the off chance, leave a comment below.
