The Woman King is a 2022 American historical epic film about the Agojie, the all-female warrior unit that protected the West African kingdom of Dahomey during the 17th to 19th centuries. Set in the 1820s, the film stars Viola Davis as a general who trains the next generation of warriors to fight their enemies.
What the heck did I just watch? Let’s make one thing clear – from purely estetic this movie looks damn good, and in many cases that’s an understatement.
And, as expected, here comes the inevitable BUT…
I cannot help wondering how damn stupid writers of this movie must’ve been, to pick up one of the most vile kingdom in African history – Dahomey was MAJOR slave trader of their day, nothing changes this regardless of how much whitewashing shill media tries to do. Also, after backlash truly started, they tried to amend things by saying its based on “alternate history” version, even though pre-release marketing material all says “based on true events”. *shm* Sheer idiotism is staggering.
And one more thing, I truly have to mention is Viola Davis herself, and those tweets she’s been putting out :
Like I said at @TIFF_NET, if you don’t plop down money on opening weekend, you’re not going to see…Black females leading a movie AGAIN. Please continue supporting #TheWomanKing , NOW PLAYING exclusively in theaters. 🗣 Agojie 👑❤🙏🏿 https://t.co/bnYTq7FLcy pic.twitter.com/lHOBBxPAwW

… Viola, darling… I do not hate black women, I only DESPISE your tone-death intersectional feminist approach. You do more bad than good for your film success in the long run.
