Series Review: Jodie Whittaker as Doctor Who

Series Review

Oh boy, where do I even begin with Jodie Whittaker as the Doctor? Let me preface this by saying that she is a talented actress, and I'm sure she's great in other roles, but as the Doctor? Not so much.

Let's start with the writing. The stories during her run as the Doctor were lackluster at best. The showrunners seemed more focused on pushing a political agenda rather than telling good sci-fi stories. The result was a series of preachy, heavy-handed episodes that lacked any real depth or nuance.

And then there's the Doctor herself. Jodie Whittaker's portrayal of the character was, well, underwhelming to say the least. She lacked the gravitas and presence of previous Doctors, and her attempts at humor fell flat more often than not. Her Doctor was often reduced to little more than a cheerleader, with her companions doing most of the heavy lifting.

Speaking of her companions, don't even get me started on them. The so-called "fam" were nothing more than cardboard cutouts, with no real personality or agency of their own. They existed solely to provide exposition and ask the Doctor questions. It was like watching a group of children follow their mom around on a field trip.

And let's not forget about the villains. The monsters during Whittaker's run were, in a word, boring. We had generic robots, giant spiders, and sentient garbage, to name a few. None of them were particularly memorable or interesting, and they all felt like retreads of previous villains.

But perhaps the biggest problem with Whittaker's Doctor was the lack of character development. By the end of her run, we still knew very little about her as a character. Sure, we got a few glimpses into her backstory, but overall she remained a mystery. This made it hard to become invested in her character, and ultimately made her tenure as the Doctor forgettable.

And then there's the elephant in the room: the ratings. During Whittaker's run, the show saw a sharp decline in viewership. Now, I'm not saying that's all her fault, but it's clear that something went wrong. Whether it was the writing, the direction, or her performance, something about her Doctor just didn't resonate with audiences.

All in all, Jodie Whittaker's run as the Doctor was a disappointing one. The writing was lackluster, the villains were forgettable, and her portrayal of the character left a lot to be desired. Here's hoping the next Doctor can bring some much-needed life back into the show. But hey, at least the theme song was still pretty cool.
